March Meeting Summary

The March Mac Maverick meeting was opened by President Steve Hafenbredl at Wahlert High School.  The February meeting minutes were passed as posted on the website.  Steve gave the Treasurer’s Report. A printout of current vendor offers is provided at the meeting. Eleven members and one guest introduced themselves. Membership renewals are due next month, and are now $25.00 per family. All family members are included in this amount. Officers are up for election also in April, and the Newsletter Editor position is open for anyone interested. Steve and members answered questions, and Steve then presented the program on Podcasting.

Tech Tip

Avatar: An avatar is basically just an icon that helps represent you on the Internet. They are mostly used on Web site forums, game programs and on some other online communities, like chat rooms. A lot of people use a picture of themselves for their avatar, while others just use a favorite picture of something they like. For example, right now, my avatar on WorldStart's message board is a beautiful yellow flower. I chose that, because I'm tired of the winter season and I'm in the mood for some warmer weather!

Most Web sites that allow you to have an avatar will have instructions on how to get yours posted. They will probably have certain guidelines (sizes, content, etc.) that you will have to follow, but they're generally easy to create. For instance, WorldStart's maximum size allowed is 100x100 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller). So, now that you know exactly what an avatar is, you can get started on creating your own. How fun is that?!.

Apple recommends calibrating your laptop computer’s battery for best performance. Perform this procedure when you first use your computer and then every few months thereafter. Plug the power adapter in and fully charge the battery until the battery indicator lights turn off and the adapter plug light goes from amber to green, which indicates that the battery is fully charged. Disconnect the power adapter and use your laptop. When your battery gets low, you will see the Low Battery warning dialog on the screen. Continue to use your computer until it goes to sleep. At that point the battery has been sufficiently drained for calibration. Connect the power adapter and leave it connected until the battery is fully charged again. See this bulletin for information that is specific for your laptop: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86284

The Beatles' music catalog should finally appear in digital form by the end of the year, claims a British tabloid. The deal will reportedly see the music come to the iTunes Store, with albums including the likes of Help!, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and possibly more. The deal is said to worth as much as £200 ($402.5) million, and has allegedly been sanctioned by lead Beatle Paul McCartney as means to help pay for his divorce from Heather Mills. Proceedings have already cost McCartney £5 million, and may jump by another £20 to £30 million after a settlement.

The release of The Beatles' music in digital form has been highly sought-after, as it continues to sell in record shops decades after the band broke up. The solo projects of the band members are already on iTunes, and McCartney himself has said the catalog should be on its way; the major obstacle is said to have been the number of parties involved, as Sony, EMI and Michael Jackson own combinations of recording and publishing rights. Additionally, royalties must be paid to McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison.
